If the person is in immediate danger, call 911 now. You can also call or text 988 for guidance on how to help someone you are worried about.

Worried About Someone Else

If you are worried someone may hurt themselves, you do not need to figure it out alone. You can contact 988 for guidance.

What you can do

  • 1

Take warning signs seriously — sudden calmness after distress, giving things away, saying goodbye, talking about being a burden, or expressing hopelessness.

  • 2

Stay with the person if it is safe to do so.

  • 3

Ask them directly if they are thinking about suicide. Asking does not make it more likely.

  • 4

Call or text 988 for guidance on how to support them and what steps to take.

  • 5

Encourage them to contact support — offer to call with them if they are willing.

  • 6

Do not promise to keep it secret if someone may be in danger.

  • 7

Call 911 if there is immediate danger or they cannot stay safe.

  • 8

Take care of yourself too — supporting someone in crisis is hard.

988 is for you too

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline supports people who are worried about someone else — not only those in personal crisis. A trained counselor can help you understand what to say, what to do, and how to take care of yourself while supporting someone you care about.

This app is a navigation tool. It does not provide counseling or emergency services. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.
